Though a few endings lack drama, Hatoful Boyfriend’s humor never failed to elicit the kind of laughter that made me accidentally Little Armenia snort. Most dialogue is campy in a late-80s anime sort of way, but nestled among all the cheese are some real gems. One character can’t speak English but his subtitles make him sound like a heroic knight.

Tax Heaven 3000 comes from MSCHF Product Studio, a small developer with one released game to its name, Chair Simulator. The real game—the interesting part—is what happens right at the end. On each playthrough, I discover something different, and sinister, about the world in which I’m casually vying for the attentions of a certain Fantail Pigeon or Rock Dove. In most games, the relationship between the avatar and the potential suitor is measured in a meter. Good interactions boost your meter, bad interactions reduce it.

This indie farming simulator game came out of nowhere to become a smash hit. In it, you play as a new farmer in a small town who inherits their grandfather’s land. There’s plenty to do, including growing and selling crops, fishing, exploring mines, and crafting new goods.

I only became suspicious that there was more to this game after realizing that the protagonist lived in a cave. Her constant references to her hunter-gatherer instincts — and that she appeared to be the only human in the game world — didn’t help settle my suspicions. Hatoful keeps you curious by doling out little story paragraphs that unlock after each playthrough. Each little blurb hints at grander political and sociological schemes within this world of giant birds. After the credits, Hatoful Boyfriend takes a much darker turn, also in line with some otome games. She goes on to describe the game as “originally a silly joke” which very quickly became a big hit.

Polygon Quarterly: Not for the Shareholders but for the Games

Many flock to it due to its sense of humor, briefly appearing human designs for the birds, and the more serious moments the game doesn’t shy away from. MSCHF also warns “if you prepare your taxes in the game, you prepare your taxes in real life,” and it is important to note the game does not cover state taxes. Though it remains to be seen whether Tax Heaven 3000 returns to Steam, MSCHF is still moving forward with launching it via itch.io in early April. And while the skepticism toward the game expressed by some Steam users might be understandable or even commendable, if Tax Heaven 3000 truly is an identity theft scam, MSCHF’s track record isn’t pointing in that direction, however limited. Namely, the aforementioned Chair Simulator boasts overwhelmingly positive reviews on Steam, based on over 4,700 impressions, and the company seems to stand firmly behind its next free-to-play title as well.
