From the statements shared by Brian’s sister Cassie and Gabby’s mother Nicole Schmidt, it can be assumed that Gabby was a favorite in her fiance’s family. In fact, Brian’s mother Roberta Laundrie treated her like her own daughter.
As the days passed and Schmidt was unable to get a hold of her daughter, she grew increasingly concerned and officially reported her missing on Sept. 11. The lawsuit alleges that Christopher and Roberta Laundrie knew the whereabouts of Gabby’s body during the time in which authorities were pouring resources into a massive missing persons investigation. PEOPLE confirmed with the Suffolk County Police Department at the time that Petito had last verbally contacted her relatives on Aug. 25, when she was near Grand Teton National Park in Jackson, Wyoming. Nicole Schmidt, Petito’s mother, received an “odd text” from her daughter’s phone on Aug. 27, 2021, according to an unsealed search warrant filed by police. After the 911 call, the couple was pulled over by Moab police on Aug. 12, 2021, and their encounter with officers was captured on body camera footage that has been publicly released.
North Port police said at a news conference on September 15 that Laundrie returned to the Florida home where he and Petito had been living with his parents on September 1, 10 days before she was reported missing. Following Petito’s disappearance, the picturesque facade of their travels began to crumble after local authorities released body camera footage of an August 12 dispute. Garrison said at a news conference Thursday that the investigation remains a missing persons case, not a murder probe, and that no intensive searches have begun because it’s unclear exactly where authorities might look. Police say they were not 911 calls and some were initiated by police officers.
Authorities said he returned to his home in Florida without her on Sept. 1, and his family has not seen him since Sept. 14. Petito was reported missing on Sept. 11 after going more than a week without contacting her family. Investigators discovered the remains, in part, after a series of witnesses came forward on social media to report that they had interacted with the couple or Laundrie in Wyoming around the time Petito disappeared.
